Tarzana, a suburban neighborhood nestled between Encino on the east and Woodland Hills to the west, owes its distinctive name to the author Edgar Rice Burroughs, famed for the popular Tarzan novels whose titular character was immortalized in films.
In 1919, Burroughs purchased the estate of General Harrison Gray Otis, publisher of the LA Times, renaming it from Mil Flores to Tarzana Ranch. Although his early attempts to establish a community in the area by subdividing part of the property did not immediately take off, the name “Tarzana” stuck for the original tract. In 1928, residents of the area and neighboring Runnymeade formally adopted the name for their combined community.
Today, Tarzana is a prosperous bedroom community featuring primarily single-family homes. It is considered to be a more tranquil alternative to nearby communities. In addition to highly rated schools, the area features two country clubs with golf courses, numerous businesses and restaurants, and several gated communities. While early residents didn’t always appreciate the area’s unique name, current residents have embraced the history behind it, renaming their business district the “Safari Walk.”
